Residential Respite Service
for the Elderly

Residential respite service is a form of temporary or short-term residential care service for elders. It serves the objective of providing temporary relief for family members or relatives who are the main caregivers of elders requiring a certain degree of personal care whilst residing in the community. It aims at encouraging and helping elders to continue living in the community for as long as possible.

The designated places for respite service include care-and-attention (C&A) places in subvented residential care homes for the elderly (RCHEs) and private homes participating in Enhanced Bought Place Scheme (EBPS Homes), and C&A places or nursing home (NH) places in contract homes.

Emergency Placement
for the Elderly

Emergency placement is provided in some subvented residential care homes for the elderly and nursing homes to offer temporary or short-term residential care service for elders. It serves the objective of guarding the elders against risks arising from lack of immediate care/accommodation until their next-of-kin are located for the elders' restoration to families or other alternatives are arranged.

For elderly persons or their families in urgent need of short-term residential care service during non-office hours, they may use the abovementioned Residential Respite Service for the Elderly (instead of Emergency Placement for the Elderly), and approach the private residential care homes for the elderly under the EBPS providing designated residential respite place for the arrangement. Non-office hours are (i) Monday to Saturday, from 5pm to 9am of the following day, and (ii) Sunday and Public Holidays, from 9am to 9am of the following day.
